A home EV charger sounds simple. Choose a charger, put it beside the car and plug in. But the part that really matters is everything behind it: your power supply, your switchboard, the circuit, the cable route, and where the car actually parks.
Start with the house, not the charger
Before we recommend an installation, we look at your existing electrical setup. Your switchboard might have plenty of room and capacity, or it might need some changes before a dedicated charging circuit can be added. That's why a good EV charger quote starts with your property, not just the model of charger.
Where should the charger go?
The best spot is usually a balance between what's convenient every day and what makes sense electrically. Think about where the car parks now, whether you might have a second EV later, how far the charging cable reaches, weather exposure, protection from knocks, and whether the cable would end up across a path or driveway.
Garages and carports are common spots, but outdoor installs are also possible when the right equipment and installation methods are used. The right location depends on your property.
What happens on the day?
A typical EV charger job goes like this. We check the switchboard and power supply, confirm the charger and where it's going, plan the cable route, install the dedicated circuit and charger, then test and certify the work. If anything else needs upgrading first, we'll tell you when we quote, not halfway through the job.
Plan for what's coming next
If you're also thinking about solar, a switchboard upgrade, a second EV or other big electrical work, let us know. Planning the jobs together can stop a decision today from becoming a headache later.
Common questions
Can I just charge from a normal power point?
Your vehicle manufacturer will have its own advice on this. A dedicated charger is a different setup, designed around your property and how you charge.
Does every home need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?
No. It depends on your existing setup and the charger you choose.
Can a charger be installed outside?
Often, yes, with the right equipment and placement.
Should I plan for solar at the same time?
If solar is on your wish list, tell us early so we can plan the whole setup together.
